Application Form and Fee
ELIGIBILITY
This competition is open to clarinetists, ages 14–22, in two divisions: high school and college. Application instructions are listed below for eligible clarinetists desiring to submit an application package to be considered for the competition finals on April 5, 2020 at the University of Maryland. A previous First Place winner may not apply until three years have passed from the competition date.
APPLICATION PACKAGE: 3 components for final competition selection
All 3 components listed below must be emailed to the competition coordinator, Alexandra (Sandra) Chappell at: amr.chappell@gmail.com by the deadline date.
APPLICATION PACKAGE DEADLINE: Sunday, March 1, 2020, 11:59 p.m. EST.
Submissions received after that date will not be considered.
1) Online Application
Download and complete the application above with required signatures. Please indicate your age, and the name, city, and state of the high school or college that you attend. Both the private teacher (or band/orchestra teacher) and the contestant are asked to attest via signature that the recording is the playing of the contestant and has not been edited, and that the contestant is between the ages of 14 and 22. Edited or altered recordings will not be accepted, including those with reverberation added. Sign, scan, and email your application to the competition coordinator as listed above.
2) Application Fee - $25.00 (USD). Please use the PayPal button above to submit your application fee. The fee is non-refundable. Please email a copy of your paid fee to the competition coordinator as listed above.
3) Required Solo Repertoire to be recorded on YouTube
High School Division: Sonata, Op. 41 by Miklós Rózsa—all movements (unaccompanied piece)
College Division: Introduction, Theme, and Variations by Gioacchino Rossini (Take 2nd endings on all repeats for the video audition.)
The audition music may be either accompanied or unaccompanied for the video recording preliminary round. It will be performed by finalists in the virtual Zoom competition on June 6, 2020. Due to the current health crisis, there will be no accompanist. Upload your unedited video of the required audition music listed above on to YouTube by the application package deadline of Sunday, March 1, 2020, 11:59 p.m. EST and email to amr.chappell@gmail.com along with the application form.
Judging
All judges for the Sidney Forrest Clarinet Competition judging events are professional clarinetists with performance expertise as orchestral musicians, military band musicians, soloists, chamber musicians, and recording artists, who hold college degrees and who are experienced teachers.
The video audition will be judged by a committee during the week following the application deadline. Applicants will be notified as to whether they have been selected as a finalist or not by March 8, 2020.
The selected finalists will be judged at the virtual Zoom competition on June 6, 2020 by a committee of three guest judges.
The University of Maryland Clarinet Symposium Fee
The University of Maryland Clarinet Symposium fee is paid for by all clarinet symposium attendees and covers a catered lunch, closing reception, guest artists, and all symposium events. If clarinet competition finalists and their families choose to bring or find their own refreshments and not to attend any symposium events (aside from the Sidney Forrest Clarinet Competition), they are not required to pay the Clarinet Symposium fee. The clarinet symposium fee and schedule will be accessible by March via the UMD clarinet website at: www.umdclarinet.com
Travel Information
The Sidney Forrest Clarinet Competition does not fund any expenses for travel to and from the competition site, including transportation, food and beverages, lodging, or any extraneous costs. These costs must be provided for by the competition finalist and/or their family. There is access from the Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) and Reagan National Airport to bus and metro stops that go to the University of Maryland. Hotels/motels are available in the College Park area near the university.
